Top 10 Water Filters For Home Use: Your Essential Guide

Finding the right water filter can be a challenge, so on this page we’ll uncover my recommended Top 10 water filters for home use.

The filters featured cover a range of price brackets, from budget to high end and vary in the contaminants they remove.

However, you can rely on all of them to reduce, or remove, chlorine, which is often the contaminant of most immediate concern to consumers.

Why Filter Your Tap Water?

Most water companies add chlorine or chloramine to water supplies in order to kill bacteria and other microbes, plus many water companies are increasingly starting to artificially add flouride to their water. Both are known to have potential negative impacts on health over an extended period of time.

Water contamination can also occur on the way into your home, or even within the home itself via older plumbing or leaking pipes. Environmental pollution is also increasingly affecting our water supplies.

If you’d like to find out more about the type of contaminants commonly found in municipal tap water, along with some of their potential effects, check out this guide on tap water.

Top 10 Water Filters Recommendations

I’ve personally used a number of water filters over the years, plus I’ve researched many, many more. So these Top 10 water filters are all great choices for a home water filter system, across a range of price brackets, based upon extensive research.

Please note, this Top 10 is not in any particular order – all the filters shown are great options depending on your budget and what you want to filter out.

However, if I were asked to pick a Number 1 filter, it would be the Big Berkey.

1 – Big Berkey Water Filtration System (Price Bracket: Mid to Top End)

If you’re looking for a water system that stands out from the crowd, the Big Berkey is the Rolls Royce of home filtration systems.

It can purify up to 3.5 gallons per hour and has a holding capacity of 2.25 Gallons. The system can remove food colouring from water without taking out the beneficial minerals your body needs, that’s how powerful it is. Almost no other system can match this performance.

Plus, if you employ the right filter with the Big Berkey, it can also remove fluoride, something the majority of filters are unable to effectively do (these can also remove fluoride).

What does it remove?

The Big Berkey lives up to its name and removes 99.999% of pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites. It will also extract harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes, as well as reduce nitrates, nitrites and unhealthy minerals such as lead and mercury.

The Big Berkey will also remove fluoride with the correct filter employed. You can read my full Big Berkey review here.

2 – British Berkefeld Stainless Steel Water Filter (Price Bracket: Mid Range)

The British Berkefeld is a truly powerful filter and does a similar job to the Big Berkey. It’s a great choice if you live in the UK, where it retails on Amazon for a more competitive price tag than the Big Berkey.

The British Berkefeld Water Purifying Systems filter out an impressive range of contaminants and are used throughout the World by Red Cross. It’s ceramic filters are powerful were, self sterilising and re-cleanable and have evolved from ceramic filter technology originally discovered in 1827 by Henry Doulton.

These are the filters reputably used by the British Royal Family!

What does it remove?

British Berkefeld® Filter Elements reduce up to 99.99% of:

  • particulates, cysts, parasites and pathogenic bacteria including E. Coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Salmonella Typhi.

Additionally, these filters will reduce chlorine, rust, sediment and organic chemicals.

With the correct filter employed a British Berkefeld is also able to reduce fluoride, something which most filters are able to perform effectively.

3 – Brita Filter Pitcher (Price Bracket: Budget)

Brita is the name that always springs to mind when water filters are mentioned. And for a reason.

There are many other filters available that do the same job as the trusty Brita filter pitcher or jug, but if you want a reliable, low cost filter, you really can’t beat a Brita (if you’ll excuse the pun). They are cheap, reliable, easy to use and fit neatly onto any kitchen counter top or inside most modern refrigerators.

What does it remove?

Reduces chlorine taste and odour, zinc taste, copper, mercury and cadmium, as well as up to 96.6% of pharmaceuticals. See the Brita site for further details.

4 – Soma Sustainable Carafe & Plant Based Water Filter (Price Bracket: Budget)

As well as an appealing look and modern design, what puts the Soma pitcher into the top 10 water filters for me is the fact it’s made of glass with a focus on sustainability.

If you’re not a fan of plastic, this is one of the few glass filters out there. It also incorporates a 100% compostable water filter, featuring coconut shell carbon and a plant-based casing. Soma even make a donation to their partner water charity for every filter sold.

What does it remove?

The Soma filter meets NSF/ANSI Standard 42 requirements for the reduction of chlorine, taste and smell. The company have also been testing for the removal of further contaminants, but further details are yet to be released.

NB: I would avoid this filter on Amazon UK, the price is very expensive compared to US for some reason.

5 – Binchotan Charcoal (Price Bracket: Budget)

If you’re up for making a water filter yourself, Binchotan active charcoal is the way to go. It’s been used in Japan as a water purifier since the 17th century, which personally I just love the idea of.

Made in the Kishu region of Japan, the Binchotan sticks are made from raw wood that has undergone a process of burning at high temperatures followed by rapid cooling.

This process carbonises the wood and leaves endless tiny cavities that trap unwanted pollutants.

I use a stick of Binchotan in a large capacity glass container with a tap on it – works great for easy access to drinking and cooking water. See my post on Binchotan charcoal water filters for more on how use Binchotan active charcoal.

What does it remove?

Binchotan active charcoal’s alkaline qualities soften and improve the taste of tap water, reduces chlorine, mineralises the water, adding important minerals such calcium, potassium and magnesium, plus balances the pH of the water.

6 – Ovopur (Price Bracket: Top End)

Ovopur water filter via Amazon.co.uk. A recommended Top 10 water filter for the home.

If there’s a prize for style in water filters, the Ovopur gets it. But it doesn’t come cheap.

Fusing old traditions with modern trends, this eco designed water filter boasts an innovative design that has won many prizes. Both functional and practically a piece of art to boot (it’s part of the permanent design collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts), this is definitely the filter of choice if style is a factor for you.

Constructed of high quality porcelain and made it France, the Ovopur, however, doesn’t come cheap and is generally only readily available online direct from the www.aquaovo.com website.

What does it remove?

The Ovopur employs a 4 stage filtration process:

  1.  KDF55 can neutralize up to 99% of chlorine, lead, mercury, nickel, chromium, and other heavy metals that may be found in drinking water.
  2. 2. Activated Carbon – used to trap pollutants that may be present in water, carbon can absorb up to 99% of nonpolar, organic substances like mineral oils, volatile organic compounds (VOCs),and pharmaceutical residues. It is also excellent for neutralizing  water’s taste and smell, effectively removes yeast and micropollutants, and absorbs traces of certain heavy metals.
  3. Microporous Bioceramics – As well as absorbing chemical or organic residues that might be in the water, active bioceramics can soften and revitalize the water by reducing the size of its molecules.
  4. Quartz Crystal – Quartz crystal sand is used to remove any lingering impurities from the water.

7 – Pur 18 Cup Dispenser (Price Bracket: Budget)

If you’re looking for a budget filter that removes some key contaminants from your water, the PUR 18 Cup Dispenser is arguably the best countertop water filter system in the lower budget range. (Uk consumers are better off going for the Brita Optimax)

It’s a best seller on Amazon, plus is great for families or those who want a filter with a larger capacity than a traditional pitcher, as it holds 18 8-oz cups (1.125 gallons) of water. It’s space saving design also means it fits neatly on any countertop or inside most fridges.

What does it remove?

The Pur 18 Cup Dispenser removes up to 95% of mercury, reduces chlorine taste and odor, plus removes an average of 96% of trace levels of pharmaceuticals.

8 – iSpring RCC7AK Reverse Osmosis 6 Stages 75GPD Under Sink Water Filter (Price Bracket: Mid Range)

Reverse osmosis systems are not everyone’s choice as they do create some waste water. Plus, as well as the contaminants we don’t want in our water, most RO systems also remove beneficial minerals from the water that the body needs.

What’s great about the iSpring is that it restores these natural beneficial minerals into the water, plus does what many more expensive reverse RO do, but at a lower cost.

Installation instructions are included and if you follow them correctly, most people are be able to install the system themselves in an hour or so without the need for a professional plumber. The iSpring gets consistently great reviews on Amazon and is a great choice for a home RO system, at a competitive price.

What does it remove?

Rejects up to 99% of 1000+ pollutants such as chlorine, fluoride, lead, arsenic, pesticide, drugs, and fertilizer.

9 – Home Master Counter Top Water Filtration System (Price Bracket: Budget to Mid Range)

Not many water filters can effectively tackle fluoride.

So if fluoride is present in your water supply and you want to filter it out (along with some other key contaminants), the Home Master Counter Top Water Filtration Systemis a great bet.

It offers an efficient, space-saving design, instals in minutes, plus it’s even portable, with its compact unit that travels well.

It’s advanced multi stage filter makes it one of the best sinktop water filtration systems on the market, tipping it into my top 10 water filters.

What does it remove?

The Tap Master’s 3 stage filtration system removes up to 93 percent of fluoride and other chemicals including VOCs, TOCs and chlorine.

10 – Culligan FM-15A Advanced Faucet Filter Kit (Price Bracket: Budget)

The Culligan Faucet Filter Kit makes into the top 10 for a couple of reasons. It’s great value and offers a cost effective alternative to a filter pitcher or jug.

I’m personally not a huge fan of faucet filters, but this is one of the superior ones out there and many people are very happy with it.

It won’t fit every faucet, so check model details before buying to ensure it is compatible, plus (depending on your water pressure) you will need to turn the tap on more slowly in order to give the water ample time to filter. Flooding the filter with a fast flow of water overpowers it and it simply can’t cope.

What does it remove?

Reduces chlorine taste and smell, lead, lindane and atrazine, sediment, and particulate class 1,  cryptosporidium, giardia cysts, plus other bad tastes and odors.

Top 10 Water Filters – the Verdict

If you’re on a budget, you still can’t beat a Brita filter pitcher. The Pur 18 cup dispenser or the Brita Optimax are also great budget options if you require a larger capacity than the traditional jug.

If you can stretch to something more mid price range, check out the Home Master.

For a more powerful filter that should last you a lifetime Big Berkey or the British Berkefeld are, in my view, top notch filters that beat most other filters hands down.
