Looking for the best countertop water filter system for your home or office?

This page recommends a range of countertop filter system options, across a variety of price brackets, to help you choose the best system for your budget.

If you’re seeking a powerful, larger capacity water filtering system, a countertop water filter system is arguably your best option. Generally, countertop water filters employ a gravity-fed drip water filter, where water is filtered as it drips from an upper chamber to a lower chamber. Since the water is filtered slowly, the filtration is generally much more effective than other methods.

Here are my recommended best countertop water filter systems – from budget models to top end filters.

Best Budget Countertop Water Filter System

The PUR 18 Cup Water Filter Dispenser

What Makes it Such a Good Choice?

The PUR 18 Cup Dispenser holds 18 8-oz cups (1.125 gallons) of water, making it a great investment if you drink a lot of water or have a family. It’s space-saving design means it can also fit in most fridges, plus it’s designed to fit conveniently in most sinks for easy refilling. The PUR 18 Cup also comes ready to go, with 1 filter, which provides up to 40 gallons of filtered water.

What Does it Filter Out?

The Pur will remove 95% of mercury, reduce chlorine (taste and odor), plus remove an average of 96% of trace levels of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom Line

This is an excellent entry level countertop filter system for the price. It gets ride of some key contaminants and holds significantly more water than a traditional pitcher, but still with a price tag under $30 (£20). It’s a huge seller on Amazon US, replacement filters are inexpensive and over 70% of consumers give it a maximum 5 star rating. In my view, it’s arguably the best countertop water filter for the money.

Note: The Pur 18 Cup is extremely expensive on Amazon UK for some reason, so I recommend the Brita XXL Optimax for UK customers. This is an equally good filter for the price bracket, again with great reviews.

British Berkefeld Gravity Water Filter

View Latest Price for the British Berkefeld Gravity Water Filter on Amazon

What Makes it Such a Good Choice?

The British Berkefeld Gravity Filter is made of quality, sturdy stainless steel. It employs (4) 7″ British Berkefeld Ceramic Super Sterasyl Filters, which are the ‘candle’ filter type and of outstanding quality. It holds approximately 2.1 gallons of filtered water and can filter up to 30 gallons per day.

The Super Sterasyl filters have evolved from the ceramic filter technology originally discovered in 1827 by Henry Doulton. Over the years the filters have been used by royalty,  military forces, relief organizations and missionaries. They are some of the best filters you can get, as they offer powerful filtration and are both self-sterilising and re-cleanable. A lot of filters can get bacteria build up and the ceramic filters used in the British Berkefeld Gravity Filter contains a tiny amount of silver, which is a known bactericide. This inhibits any growth of bacteria. The fact they are re-cleanable is also a huge benefit, as it prolongs the life of the filters.

What Does it Filter Out?

British Berkefeld® Filter Elements reduce up to 99.99% of particulates, cysts, parasites and pathogenic bacteria including E. Coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Salmonella Typhi. Additionally, these filters will reduce chlorine, rust, sediment and organic chemicals. With the correct filter employed a British Berkefeld is also able to reduce fluoride, something which most filters are not able to perform effectively (these filters can).

Bottom Line

The British Berkefeld Water Purifying Systems filter out an impressive range of contaminants and are used throughout the World by Red Cross. It’s ceramic filters are powerful, self sterilising and re-cleanable.

As well as treated water, this powerful system also filters untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, so is also ideal for travel too, so long as you have the capacity to transport it. If you are looking for the best mid price countertop water filter system, this is an excellent choice.

Please note, this product is not the same as the Big Berkey below. The British Berkefeld brand employs ceramic filters and the Big Berkey uses the Black Berkey revolutionary filters.

Best Top End Countertop Water Filter System

Big Berkey Stainless Steel Gravity Water Filter System

View Latest Price for the Big Berkey Gravity Water Filter on Amazon

What Makes it Such a Good Choice?

What sets the Big Berkey water filters aside from most other filters are the Black Berkey revolutionary filters and the high quality stainless steel (high grade 304 stainless steel).

The Black Berkey filters inside the system purifies up to 27.000 liters of water and will last up to an impressive 11 years. Which if you consider that most pitcher jugs need a replacement filter every month or so, is a pretty long time.

A Big Berkey can purifiy up to 3.5 gallons per hour and has holding capacity of 2.25 Gallons. Like the British Berkefeld it has cleanable, self-sterilizing filters.

The system is so powerful it can remove food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs and has been rated a water purifier (as opposed to a water filter). Virtually no other system can duplicate this performance.

What Does it Filter Out?

The Big Berkey system removes 99.999% of pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites, extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes and reduces nitrates, nitrites and unhealthy minerals such as lead and mercury.

A Big Berkey system can also remove fluoride (with the correct filter employed), which is notoriously difficult to do effectively and something the activated carbon filters in most water filter systems are unable to address.

From a filtration perspective the Black Berkey’s filter out the same chemicals and contaminants that the Super Sterasyl Ceramic Filters do in a British Berkefeld, but also go beyond this by removing Lead, MTBE’s, and other heavy metals. In addition, Black Berkey’s are rated as water purifiers, since they filter out bacteria to a 99.99999% level and viruses to a 99.9999% level.  The black berkeys also filter out Chlorine to undetectable levels, while the ceramics will only remove > 90%.

Bottom Line:

Big Berkey is one of the best selling brands in water filters and purification systems all over the world and recommended as No.1 filter system on the market by a variety of health magazines, labs and independent health sites, and millions of happy customers all over the world.

The Black Berkey filters and Ceramic filters are basically the same in terms of cleaning, price, and overall day to day use. However, the black berkeys have a much longer lifespan at around 11 years, plus in terms of filtration they are more powerful – to the extent in fact that they are rated as a purifier.
